Payne Fisher was a 17th-century English poet who is remembered for his elegies and epitaphs commemorating great English military and political leaders. His most famous is undoubtedly 'Irenodia Gratulatoria' – a poem in which he praises the life and career of Oliver Cromwell. Fisher goes beyond just a basic biography, extending the praises to Cromwell's character and virtues. In fact, Fisher even gives Cromwell "credit for the foundation of the republic". Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban was a 17th-century French engineer who, after serving as the Marshal of France, became known as the greatest engineer of his time. It was from his surveys and developments in fortifications that propelled him to engineering fame. In fact, his fortification philosophies were used for nearly a century after his life. Vauban understood that at some point, all forts would fall, no matter how powerful. From this, Vauban sought to improve fort designs to absorb as much of the attack force as possible, even including house and structures to support fortification walls.

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.

The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two?
