About This Item

Franklin Center, Pennsylvania: The Franklin Library, 1980. Collector's Edition. Full Leather. Near Fine+/No Jacket as Issued. An American classic in full red leather SIGNED by the first African-American author to win the National Book Award (1953), Ralph Ellison. Author's first book. A socially-significant work by an author with a large intellect and important viewpoint. A handsome dark red leather volume with gold-gilt cover designs and page edges with bound-in silk bookmark. In fine condition but for light rubbing on the bottom cover edges. The 50th Anniversary of the publication of INVISIBLE MAN was featured on PBS' critically-acclaimed American Masters program early in 2002 thus demonstrating the importance of this book in our American literary culture. Ellison's highly-anticipated second novel was not completed prior to his death; that book, JUNETEENTH, was completed at the request of his widow by Ellison's literary executor, Professor John Callahan of Lewis and Clark College, and published by Random House in 1999. A lovely copy.

Synopsis

Even though Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man is sometimes featured on banned books lists, it remains a consistent staple on many high school reading curriculums. In the novel, Ellison laments the feeling of hopelessness and invisibility that many Black men experience in the United States, and it elegantly explores the themes of racism and bigotry in ways that are both unsettling and accessible.
