Description:
Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana Univ Press, 1982. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR to Sharon Sklar, who designed the dustjacket for this book-"Dear Sharon Sklar- Many thanks for the nice letter, but more importantly, thank you for the wonderful design work for the Oxherding Tale; what you've done here is beautiful - stunning, in fact, one of the best covers I've ever seen, and I love it. As I mentioned to John Gallman, people should buy the novel for the cover alone (forget the contents). With great appreciation, Charles Johnson, July 1982." A wonderful Association Copy , Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket with a small indentation rear panel at spine. Chartles Johnson went on to win the National Book Award for his novel "Middle Passage". Quite simply the best possible Association Copy of this title one could hope to own. . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. First Edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. Association Copy.

Description:
Signed. Near Fine. Softcover. The late R C Hickman became a professional photographer after WW II. He made a visual record of the black community in Dallas, Texas for 3 decades. He worked for the Dallas Star, Jet Magazine and the NAACP. There are 109 mostly full page black and white photographs. He got photos of important celebrities when they came to Dallas: Martin Luther King, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Louis and Thurgood Marshall to name a few. His photos of regular folks are the best though. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan wrote the Preface and said, "These are images of the ordinary lives of extraordinary people". The book is in near fine condition with only very slight shelf wear. The dust jacket has a crease on the upper left front. The pages are clean and unmarked, and the corners are square. The author has dated and signed on the title page (no inscription).

Duncan, the original Porgy in "Porgy and Bess," was Gershwin’s personal choice, singing the role more than 1,800 times. His first operatic performance was in 1945 at the New York City Opera Company as Tonio in Leoncavallo’s "Pagliacci." He taught at Howard University for over fifty years, during which time he continued a rigorous concert performance schedule, logging over 2,000 performances the world over. He was a recipient of the George Peabody Medal, the Donaldson Award, the New York Drama Critic’s Award for "Lost In The Stars," and numerous domestic and foreign honorary awards and degrees. The first letter, dated Feb. 1, 1954, is written on stationery from the Hotel Monticello, Longview, Washington, and is in the original addressed and stamped envelope. In it Duncan at one point makes a pun by advising Shaw not to be consumed by…

Description:
Signed. First Edition. The late Comer Cottrell was an extremely successful Dallas businessman. He was also influential in politics, education, sports and cultural affairs. He was a minority owner of the Texas Rangers, he brought Paul Quinn College to Dallas and he helped elect Mayor Ron Kirk, Dallas' first black mayor. The book is inscribed to the late Joe Atkins, another trailblazing Dallasite, who, in 1955, sued North Texas College for admission on the basis of racial discrimination. In addition, there is a bookmark for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ellis and Betty Davis. Ellis Davis was basketball coach of Roosevelt H S in Dallas. They named a stadium after him. The book is in fine, unread condition. The dust jacket has a quarter inch tear at the fold on the back flap and there is minor shelf wear. The book is inscribed, dated and signed on the front free end page. An important book with significant associations.
