Special edition issued in advance of the regular publication of 7500 copies of the general report of the expedition and the chapters relating to the fishes and fisheries of Port Rico which was ordered to be printed by joint resolution of Congress on May 14, 1900. 350pp. Includes Introduction - pages 1-26, "General Report on the Investigations in Port Rico ..." by Barton Warren Evermann, pages 27- 48 "The Fisheries and Fish Trade of Porto Rico" by William A. Wilcox, and pages 49-350 "The Fishes of Porto Rico" by Barton Warren Evermann and Millard Caleb Marsh. 49 high quality chromolithographs of ocean creatures which "accurately represent the brilliant coloration of some of the fishes of this interesting region". 17 by C.B. Hudson. Charles Bradford Hudson is an artist listed in Ray Davenport's "Art Reference and Price Guide". Hudson lived from 1865-1939. The remaining 32 colored lithographs are by A. H. Baldwin. The colored lithographs are printed by Julius Bien and Co. N.Y. Three large fold-out maps bound in at back. Numerous engravings. 117 figures. Scholarly and scientific report with family, genus and species classifications - 75 family, 165 genus and 291 species descriptions. This is a report on the investigation of the waters about Porto Rico, specifically its fishery resources and aquatic fauna, shortly after its acquisition by the United States. In Dec. 1898 the steamer Fish Hawk with a qualified crew of specialists, left for the region to collect animal specimens until February of 1899 thereby greatly increasing the knowledge of marine life in the West Indies. An economic study of the fishing industry was conducted. Spine of cover is a little darker. Owner's stamp is on front endpapers and page IV. There is a crease in one of Baldwin's plates. Pages edges toned a little. Text is clean and in very nice shape. The colored lithographs are very outstanding. Very good plus condition..
