Pages are moderately tanned and foxed throughout, heavier at end-papers, paste-downs and text-block edges. Minor pencil marking to front free end-paper. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout however binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Peeling leather. Gilt lettering is darkened. Mild crushing to spine ends.

Contemporary half caf, rebacked, on marble boards; tooled panels formed by paralle gilt lines; author and title gilt in upper panel. Collation: xix,[1], 407 pp. +15 copper engraved plates. The plates contain 214 numbered figures. Text block edges speckled. The text is generally clean, but p. 400 facing first plate had minor foxing. Plates have various degrees of foxing and some damp staining. Smith was president of the Linnaean Society in London and desired to prepare this text as "an introductory publication
desirable in this country, on an original plan, easy, comprehensive, and fit for general use
