Meadows, 1751. 16mo, [5-]347, [3, advertisements]pp., small strip missing from top of first 2 leaves, without loss, a little spotted or soiled in places, nineteenth-century hard-grained morocco, lettered in gilt on spine, the patch where the author's name should be is missing, lacking rear free endpaper, sound. Hayes, an 'accomptant and writing-master', first published these interest tables in 1732 and they were reprinted regularly for the next 70 years. The early editions are all rare, the only edition in Kress being 1765. (ESTC 166875, O and C only).

In a full morocco binding. The binding is tight and firm. The boards are attached by the cords only. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and marks. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional spots or handling mark. Very Good

Richard Hayes was an English mathematician whose most important works were on calculating interest and annuities upon lives based on early statistics . He also published The Young Merchant's Assistant ( 1718 ) and Negotiators' Magazine; or the Exchange Anatomized ( 1719 ) but this small volume was the standard for the London business man who with it could calculate interest with a quick glance and the mathematical formula on large transactions. A very good copy bound in full calf double ruled in gilt,, raised bands ruled in gilt, front free endpaer nearly detached and stamped Cornwell House.
