About This Item
[London]: Printed for the War-Office, by T. Egerton, (1797) & 1798.. Two volumes bound in one, first editions, 8vo, (iv), ix-xv, (i), 342 pp, with 16 folding plates; (iv), 54 pp, 31 folding plates. A few spots and some faint browning, neat repair to tear on plate IX in the second work, contemporary signatures of James Frampton (?of the Dorset Yeomanry Cavalry) and Ralph Baxter (?6th Dragoons) to the respective fly leaves of each work. Both volumes uncut in the original boards, edges rubbed, neatly rebacked at different times, the first work with a modern printed label, the second with the original label preserved. Detailed works listing the various commands and providing guidance on how they should be carried out. In his short preface to the Instructions, Fawcett writes that "every Officer of Cavalry shall be provided with a Copy of these Regulations, and the Commanding Officers of Corps are to take Care that this Order be duly observed". The Elucidations were "intended for the immediate instruction of officers on their entering into the Cavalry Service" and was "recommended to the Attention and Practice of all Regimental Officers". Fawcett was one of the main figures responsible for standardising the Army's procedures during this time, "outstanding works... crucial in preparing the army for the great struggle against revolutionary and Napoleonic France" (ODNB). Neither work is common, ESTC lists only 3 copies of the Instructions in the UK plus 6 in the US and 4 copies of the Elucidation in the UK and 1 copy in the US.
