Giles Beecher Jackson was an attorney, entrepreneur, real estate developer, newspaper publisher, and civil rights activist. Daniel Webster Davis was an American educator, minister, and poet. In March 1902, Virginia governor Andrew Jackson Montague commissioned the Negro Building, a venue for exhibitions by and about African Americans, as well as to celebrate the tricentennial of the founding of Jamestown.
