About This Item

Seattle: The Windowpane Press, 2012. First printing. 13 x 10.5 inches, single sheet of handmade paper, with deckle on all four edges. Printed letterpress by Bonnie Thompson Norman, from calligraphy by Linda Lundy, in an edition of twenty-six press-lettered copies. As new.

A travesty of a medieval indulgence, inspired by Caxton: "Jacobus Jones, quaestiarius of Washington, United States of America, by his own authority, with the sanction of Amituofuo, through the intercession of Quan Yin, and given a general understanding of the teachings of Pure Land Buddhism, does entirely remit all temporal punishment for wrongs previously committed by the person or persons named in this document . . . a plenary indulgence, equivalent to indulgences granted for a visit to Rome in a jubilee year or a pilgrimage on foot from Paris to Santiago de Compostela." Space has been left for the name of the penitent and the amount of their alms to be written in, as well as for the date of execution of the document. Wittily and skillfully contrived.
