The first law of urban develop ment in South Africa is to root up all indigenous plants and trees and re place them with exotics. Palm trees are usually some of the first to be re moved, particularly Hyphaene nata lensis and Phoenix reclinata which once abounded on the fast develop ing coast of Natal.
