Austin, Texas: L.E. Daniell, 1896. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Rare First Edition. Professionally rebound with original covers. Boards have some damage, but in good enough condition to be worth saving. Pages have been professionally repaired. All original pages intact. Fly page has a name plate that reads "Benj. Frenkel, M.D.". Frenkel was born in Galveston, TX in 1877. He was a student from 1893-1896, then Apothecary, U.S.N. 1898; Hospital Steward, 1899; Senior Medical Officer on U.S.S. Hornet during Spanish-American War; Acting Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Naval Hospital , San Juan Porto Rico, 1899-1900. He eventually became a prosperous surgeon in New York City, but was arrested several times for drug charges. In May, 1919 he was arrested for illegal possession of morphine. In September 1927, he died in the prison ward of Bellevue Hospital of cerebral hemorrhage. Fly page also has a gift inscription addressed to Dr. Quinn on the back of a Drs. Danforth & Quinn office slip. Dr. Clarence Quinn, from Texas City, Texas, made a direct impact in the city's history beginning as a child when he was a member of the first Boy Scout Troop in Texas. It was Scouting that piqued his interest in medicine. He was only one of three doctors in Texas City before becoming a Captain in the Army during World War II. He resumed his duties as Texas City Health Officer after his service which found him directing and participating in the aftermath of the infamous Texas City Explosion in 1947. There is extensive documentation on his participation in the aftermath. This disaster caused him to partner with another local doctor to build Texas City's first hospital. He practiced medicine in his hometown until his death more than 50 years ago.

Description:
Halifax: Printed by Abraham Hodge, 1799. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Good. 8vo. 502, (18) pages. Hardcover bound in original full leather. The binding is worn and scuffed but sound. Some of the scuffing on the binding has deep gouges, especially on the rear cover where a strip of leather is missing along the fore edge. Hinges are secure, but there is a strip of old cloth book tape on the front inner hinge, and some of the last few leaves of the index are stuck together at the gutter. This does not really affect the text but there might have been some adhesive applied there. Corners bumped. Contains the front and rear blank flyleaves. There is an early ink signature on the front pastedown which appears to be "L. Silliman" (possibly Levi Silliman? 1797-1867. He was the second Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in North Carolina). "L. Silliman" also is written in light pencil on the rear pastedown, next to an early ink notation of "Haywood." There also a couple of bolder early 20th… Read More

The map depicts a camp with symbols of canons, along Fox Creek and Little Fox River. Notation on verso "Plan of Camp May 9, 1779." On left corner: "Hedq [Headquarters] of God____." There are a few possible locations based on the name Little Fox River, but perhaps the most likely seems to be in what was then referred to as the Northwest Territory, in present day Illinois, some 58 miles south of Vincennes, because there are recorded military activities in the area in the timeframe. In December 1778 the British took Ft. Sackville, in Vincennes on the Wabash River along the border of present day Illinois and Indiana. Then in February 1779 American forces under George Rogers Clark retook the fort, re-naming it Ft. Patrick Henry. "In… Read More

[Texas Revolution] Texas Veteran Association. Twenty-Fifth Annual Re-Union Texas Veterans. Dallas, April 20 and 21. 1898. [Dallas, Texas?]: Texas Veteran Association. 1898. Color silk ribbon in form of the Texas flag. 5.75 x 20 cm. Very good.
All of these veteran reunion ribbons are scarce. The ribbon is from the 1898 25th reunion in Dallas of Texas veterans who fought in the Texas Revolutionary war witj Mexico. The result of winning the war with Mexico Texas gained its Independence and became the Republic of Texas its own country in 1836. There were not that many veterans of the war and not that many were surviving into 1898 so that makes this a pretty rare ribbon. A great display piece.

Very good set of Catlin's classic account of his travels and sojourns with the Native American peoples from 1832-1839.Second edition with colour illustrations featuring 312 full-colour engravings on 180 plates (not the "400 Coloured Plates" described on the title page and spines).
