About This Item
Philadelphia: The Bible and Tract Distributing Society, 1877. Rare first edition of Pumphrey's report on the condition of the Indian tribes removed to the Indian Territory and Kansas. Octavo, original wrappers, hand-colored folding map of the Indian Territory assigned to the various tribes along with information about the treaties which led to the formation of the reserve, appendix. Introduction by John G. Whittier. In very good condition. Uncommon and desirable with the detailed folding map present. Stanley Pumphrey spent several weeks among the Indian tribes removed to the Indian Territory and Kansas in 1876. Although in conversing with the Indians he found the impression widely prevailing that their prospects were hopeless and that their removal from their ancestral lands was doomed to lead to their extinction, this pro-removal tract offers detailed evidence to the contrary.
