About This Item
Cassie Chadwick ( one of Betsy Bigley's several names) was a woman of many talents, and she used them all in an extraordinary career. She was entrepreneur, forger, clairvoyant, prostitute and society lady. The railroad worker's daughter from Eastwood, Ontario was born on a farm in 1857 and died in jail in 1907, and in between became one of the most famous women of North America. She achieved her greatest social glory as the wife of a wealthy Cleveland doctor. Her fantastic lifestyle was financed by an ever widening spiral of loans, promissory notes and forgeries drawn on banks from New York city to Oberlin, Ohio and when her financial empire collapsed the shock waves reverberated through the banking world. Some of the greatest financiers in America found themselves mentioned at Mrs. Chadwick's trial.... Bookplate to ffep, name to prelim. A section of photographs accompany text. This book remains clean, bright and very interesting.
