About This Item

Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A: Houghton Mifflin, 1973. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Type: Hardback Hardcover BCE Book in Good Condition. No Jacket. Schlesinger wrote this book in 1973 out of a double concern: The first is that the pivotal institution of the American government, the Presidency, has gotten out of control and badly needs new definition and restraint; the second is that revulsion against inordinate theories of presidential power may produce an inordinate swing against the presidency and thereby do essential damage to our national capacity to handle the problems of the future. The answer to the runaway Presidency is not a messenger-boy Presidency. The American democracy must discover a middle-ground between making the President a czar and making him/her a puppet. The problem is to devise means of reconciling a strong and purposeful President with equally strong and purposeful democratic control --a strong President within the Constitution. The book devotes special attention to the history of war-making power. x + 505 pages with Notes and Index. 6 x 9.25 inches. 1973, Houghton Mifflin, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

Synopsis

From two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., comes one of the most important and influential investigations of the American presidency. The Imperial Presidency traces the growth of presidential power over two centuries, from George Washington to George W. Bush, examining how it has both served and harmed the Constitution and what Americans can do about it in years to come. The book that gave the phrase “imperial presidency” to the language, this is a work of “substantial scholarship written with lucidity, charm, and wit” (The New Yorker).
