Description:
1901 Booker T Washington 1ed Up from Slavery American Poverty KKK Racism

"Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others."
― Booker T. Washington, Up from Slavery

Booker T. Washington was a famous 19th-century American civil rights activist known for his anti-slavery platform during the height of Negro lynchings in the American South. Born as a slave child during the American Civil War, Washington describes his difficulties and obstacles in his autobiography 'Up From Slavery'. This work follows more than forty years of his life, the state of race relations, and the rise and fall of the Negro social ladder.

While many authors and political leaders, such as WEB du Bois, were highly critical of Washington's work, he still emphasized the importance of education among the black population, especially in the South, which was a realistic tactic to easing racial tensions. This book was also gives the first mention of extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

1787 Daniel Defoe Voyage Round the World English Colonization Robinson Crusoe 2v

"It is never too late to be wise."
– Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe

Daniel Defoe was an English author who gained enduring fame for his novel, Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel and helped popularize the genre in Britain. In some texts he is even referred to as one of the founders, if not the founder, of the English novel.

While Robinson Crusoe is his best and most iconic work, he wrote numerous other works including another adventure voyage book called "A New Voyage Round the World". Certainly this work is nowhere near as popular or as well-known as 'Robinson Crusoe', it does show Defoe's interest in world travel and English colonization. According to Jane Jack,
"Colonization made a deep appeal to Defoe's imagination. To him, a colony was a symbol. It stood for his optimistic conception of human nature, representing his conception of the good life of… Read More

1876 BEAUTIFUL Robinson Crusoe Mariner Defoe Voyages Shipwreck English ART FOLIO
"It is never too late to be wise."
― Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe
"One of the most beautiful travel books in figures of the eighteenth century." (Gumuchian)
Called the original adventure novel, Robinson Crusoe was originally published in 1719 and depicts the life of a castaway who learns to survive on an island for decades. However, while it saw substantial success with the masses, there were still those that were not impressed. Charles Dickens said,
"...Robinson Crusoe should be the only instance of a universally popular book that could make no one laugh and could make no one cry."
This impressive edition was published in London by Cassell and features decorative page borders and in-text illustrations.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
