Turin: L'Artistica Editrice, 2012. Three volumes. Very finely illustrated with 551 colour plates, folio, 1440 pages, stout pictorial boards, a very good set. Extremely heavy, weighing 15 kilos when packed - extra postage will be required. Please note that due to the extreme weight and value of this set, we can only send overseas by courier service. [The text - bilingual English/Italian - is completely new. For each grape it covers history, planting, pruning, morphological characteristics of trunk, shoots, canes, leaves, fruits, disease susceptibility, ripening periods, yield and wines. Ampelography is the science of identifying, naming and classifying grape varieties through detailed analysis of the unique characteristics of the plant, its morphology and the different phases of its development. At the same time, the vine has its own extraordinary aesthetic and iconographic appeal. The exceptional convergence of the Authors' scientific contributions and the dazzling splendour of the chromolithographs is thus what makes the three volumes of this Illustrated Historical Universal Ampelography so unique. This is the first time that a single work has united the most beautiful collections of grape plates: the Ampelographie - Traité général de viticulture by Pierre Viala and Victor Vermorel (1901-10), Giorgio Gallesio's Pomona Italiana (published between 1817 and 1839) and Ampelografia Italiana, published in 1882 by the Ampelographic Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture. The work illustrates 551 cultivars, complete with entries describing each one and listing its synonyms.]. First Edition. Pictorial boards. New.

Patterned endpapers darkened around the edges, but clean. Blank endpapers foxed. Otherwise clean throughout. This is the 2nd limited edition of 350 copies. One of the scarcest architectural books about Kentucky traditional architecture and gardens, and rare in any condition. It was produced with the assistance of a group of about 200 subscribers, who quickly brought out another edition after the first limited edition of 250 copies was gone. Illustrated throughout in black & white and printed on a heavy stock glossy paper, it has survived relatively well. All text and illustrations clean. It covers over 250 of the most interesting and historically significant structures in Kentucky. Almost all illustrated with at least one photograph. 12" high X 10" wide, 180 pages. Description:
LONDON: Groombridge and Sons A VG copy in the original green decorative cloth binding with gilt plant pictures and titles to front board and spine, and blind stamped decoration to rear board. The boards have bevelled edges. This work is generally attributed to Shirley Hibberd. It is clear from the Preface that it contains work from a number of authors, so it is likely that Hibberd had the editorial role. A number of the colour plates appear in 1870's copies of the Floral World - again edited by Hibberd. It is undated but is probably late 1870's/early1880's. With title page in red and black inks; colour printed frontispiece and 35 further colour printed plates, and numerous black and white illustrations - some full page. The binding is slightly shaken with a little bumping to corners and wear to edges including spine joint edges. The original endpapers are present. The contents are generally very clean apart from the very occasional brown spot. Some of the plant outlines can be seen faintly…

Description:
Chatwin Books, 2021. First Edition. Trade Paperback. New. New! 'I know from my own experience that an evening spent tending my garden, after another incomprehensible day, brings a strength and calmness that no other activity can match. Is it the qualities associated with gardening, such as nurturing and the hard work of hands and heart, that are deficient in our culture? Much good writing has been done about the garden as a special place.' Madeleine Wilde's woodland garden on the south slope of Seattle's Queen Anne Hill was more than a "special place." It was her Sanctuary, her prism through which she explored the world and accomplished "much good writing." For two decades, starting in the early 1990s, Madeleine's "Notes from the Garden" delighted readers of the Queen Anne & Magnolia News in Seattle. Here, in luminous prose, is the best of her work from those years, ranging from hands-on advice for gardeners and would-be gardeners to poetically charged, often wry, insights into life in the tradition…
