Four volumes 2.155 kg. in total; Volume 1: -- Chaucer's England and the Early Tutors; XVI, 176 pages, last page blank, prefatory note to the illustrations, introduction by author, introduction to complete edition acknowledgements, notes to the illustrations and index. Colour illustrated frontispiece, showing "Chaucer reading his poems to a noble company". The text is illustrated with copious contemporary black-and-white illustrations and reproductions of artwork from the time, along with modern black-and-white photographs. Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the front panel and backstrip. Red coloured tint to the top text block edge. Rubbing to the book corners and to the backstrip edges and there is wear and discolouration to the book edges. Browning and some foxing to the text block edges, endpapers and browning to the internal text. Colour illustrated dustwrapper with white titles to the front panel and backstrip. Black-and-white illustration of author to the rear fold over panel. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners and backstrip edges. There is a small tear to the lower edge of the front dustwrapper panel and a 1 inch tear to the lower left-hand corner of the same panel. Browning and foxing to the rear dustwrapper panel and there is a small puncture mark to the same panel 3 inches from the top edge. Browning to the backstrip. Browning and foxing to the verso of the dustwrapper and clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. Volume 2: -- The Age of Shakespeare and the Stewart Period; XII, 206 pages, prefatory note to the illustrations, introduction by author. Colour illustrated frontispiece, showing Queen Elizabeth -- "a shrewd, educated and moderate young woman". Within the text they are another three colour plates and illustrations in black-and-white both contemporary and modern photography. Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the front panel and backstrip. A little rubbing to the backstrip edges and book corners. Browning and foxing to the text block edges and heavier browning and foxing to the endpapers. Light browning to the internal text. Colour illustrated dustwrapper with a little chipping to the dustwrapper corners and top backstrip edge. Black-and-white illustration of author to the rear fold over panel. Browning to the backstrip and to the rear dustwrapper panel which has foxing. Browning and foxing to the verso of the dustwrapper. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. There rears a 1 inch tear with a small horizontal component to the lower right-hand corner of the rear dustwrapper panel. Volume 3: -- The Eighteenth Century; XII, 212 pages, last 3 pages blank, intentionally, prefatory note to the illustrations, list of illustrations, introduction by author, and knowledge, notes to the illustrations and index. Colour illustrated frontispiece, showing Queen Anne and a Knight of the Garter, 1713. The text is illustrated with another three colour plates within the text with contemporary and modern black-and-white illustrations throughout the text. Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the front panel and backstrip. Red coloured tint to the top text block edge. Rubbing to the book corners and backstrip corners. Browning and foxing to the text block edge. Offset tanning and browning to the endpapers and browning to the internal text. Volume 4: -- The Nineteenth Century; XII, 188 pages, the last two pages blank, prefatory note to the illustrations, list of illustrations, introduction by author, descriptive notes to the illustrations and index. Colour illustrated frontispiece, showing "Foxhunting". The text is illustrated with three further colour plates in the text and numerous black-and-white contemporary and modern photographs and illustrations. Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the front panel and backstrip. Rubbing to the book corners and backstrip edges. Bumping to the top edge of the front board. Some stains to the front panel and rubs to the rear book panel. Browning and foxing to the text block edges and to the endpapers. Browning to the internal text. Colour illustrated dustwrapper with white titles to the front panel and backstrip. Black-and-white illustration of author to the rear fold over panel. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners and backstrip edges. A few small tears to the top dustwrapper edge and there is a 1 inch tear with a 1 inch horizontal tear to the lower left-hand corner of the front dustwrapper panel. There is a 1 inch tear to the lower edge of the rear dustwrapper panel. There has been lots of colour to the backstrip, commencing with removal of a sticker, 3 inches from the top edge. Browning and foxing to the rear dustwrapper panel and to the verso of the dustwrapper. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. A 4 volume set on the social history of England from Chaucer up to the end of the 19th century. Copiously illustrated with both contemporary illustrations and modern photographs it gives an idea of how the English society lived and worked in their day. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
