About This Item

Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1949. Hardcover. 4to. Tan cloth with brown spine lettering and decoration. vi, 211pp. Extensive illustrations, map/pictorial endpapers. Very good. Mild binding wear. A tight and nice first edition of this superbly-illustrated chronicle by the noted Lincoln bibliographer and Illinois State Historian (1893-1980) -- with fine autograph addition: Tipped in before title page is an attractive Typed Note Signed from Monaghan, 1p, 8" X 11", Springfield, IL, 30 September 1950. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman at the famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago. Very good. Faint original folds. On "Illinois State Historical Library" letterhead citing his official title, Monaghan writes "I shall be glad to come to the dinner honoring Allan Nevins on October 13.... I appreciate very much getting this invitation." Signed simply "Jay" large and bold in black ink. The occasion for this dinner was almost certainly to celebrate the publication of Nevins' two-volume "The Emergence of Lincoln."
