Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1968. Hardcover. 8vo. Yellow cloth with grey lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xiv, 266pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Fine/very good. Jacket spine lightly sunned. Tight, exceptionally nice first edition, handsomely inscribed and signed by the author in blue ballpoint on front flyleaf: "Autographed especially for / Dorothy O'Connell / with every good wishes / Ruth Painter Randall." The only thing Randall's subtitle lacks is her book titles, which include "Lincoln's Sons," "Mary Lincoln: Biography of a Marriage," "The Courtship of Mr. Lincoln," "I, Mary" and "Colonel Elmer Ellsworth." Surprisingly scarce in signed, first edition, jacketed copies. The only "his 'n' hers historians" in the lengthy history of Lincoln historians -- he scholarly, she popular: James (1991-1953) was an American historian and author ("Constitutional Problems Under Lincoln," "Lincoln the President") considered by many the greatest 20th century Lincoln scholar; Ruth (1892-1971)helped research some of his works and herself authored popular titles.
