The upper edge of the text block is lightly foxed. The end papers show some age-toning / foxing. The interior pages are otherwise clean. Herbert M. Shelton was a controversial American advocate of alternative medicine, raw food, fasting, vegetarianism etc. He was a proponent of the Natural Hygiene Movement which was founded by Sylvester Graham in the 1830’s. Shelton ran into legal troubles due to his unorthodox treatments. In 1956 the American Vegetarian Party nominated him to run for president. The “Hygienic System” was printed in 7 volumes (1934-1947). Volume II (first printed in 1947) deals with “orthotrophy” or what the author considered to be proper nutrition.
