About This Item

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons 1901. (Hardcover) 356pp. Very good, no dust jacket. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine and a detailed gilt illustration of a sailing ship on the front cover. Frontispiece, illustrated plates, illustrations, maps. The corners are lightly bumped, the front hinge is starting to crack and there is a previous owner's inscription. "Several years ago I wrote a series of articles for the 'Boy's Own Paper,' relating some of my adventures in the Navy, and my assertment of yarns was very favourably received by the juvenile public for whom it was written. I am consequently encouraged to expand these, bringing the story up to date, and illustrating the principal events, in the hope that they will make an interesting volume, and give some grown-up boys an idea of a sailor's life and experiences during nearly fifty years in her Majesty's service" - from the Introduction. (Juvenile, Adventure and Adventurers, Juvenile, Royal Navy, Sailors, Sea Adventure, Travel).
