1687 De Officiis CICERO Philosophy ROME Julius Caesar du Ryer French Latin

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."
― Marcus Tullius Cicero

Cicero's "De Officis," describes the best way to live, behave, and work. It also depicts Roman politics and way of life during the Roman Republic after the overthrow of Julius Caesar. This work is notably famous for being the third book ever printed and that "during the 15th-century, 'De Officiis' was the pinnacle of moral philosophy" (Baldwin, 590).
This 17th-century edition is notable for containing both Latin and French translations in parallel – translated by Paul du Ryer.

1690 History of Theodosius I Roman Empire Pagan v Christianity ROME Olympics 2v
Esprit Fléchier was a 17th-century French author who composed two important historical works – the histories of Cardinal Ximenes and Emperor Theodosius I – which are known to be highly accurate and insightful. While known primarily for his written sermons, spiritual memoires, and religious writings, these historical works have been Flechier's most desirable works.
This book, 'Histoire de Theodose le Grand', covers the life and political reign of Roman Emperor Theodosius I. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule the entire the Roman Empire and played a critical role in the establishment of Christianity in the Empire and banned pagan rituals which were common in both Roman and Greek cultures. Theodosius is also remembered for prohibiting the holding of Olympic Games following the games of 393 AD (for the association with pagan rituals).
This 17th-century edition is more complete and extensive than the first edition,… Read More

Alessandro Tassoni was a 16th-century Italian poet best known for his work 'La Secchia Rapita', or 'The Rape of the Pail'. This epic poem was written sometime in the mid-1610s but had significant trouble getting published much in part to the Catholic Church's censorship. The story follows Italian battles with interventions by gods and the Pope.
This 1670 first edition was collected and edited by Gaspare Salviani published in Bologna by Longhi.

A scarce copy of Hooper's second work, an apologetic in defence of the Anglican Church. Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. Subsequently made Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1704 to 1727. All of Hooper's works were published anonymously. The text of this states there are three discourses, but the book contains only two discourses; the… Read More

Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
