Surrealist painter and printmaker Dmitri Petrov (1919-1986) was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The poems by English poet Thomas Hood (1799-1845) illustrated here by Petrov are: The Dream of Eugene Aram -- The Last Man -- The Song of the Shirt -- The Key: A Moorish Romance -- The Stag-Eyed Lady: A Moorish Tale -- The Bridge of Sighs. While He Was In His Early 20S, He Traveled To Paris With His Friend Stanton Macdonald Wright, And Spent Several Years There Studying Art. Around The Time Of His Marriage In 1913, He Became Involved In The Nascent Film Industry In The Los Angeles Area And Was Involved In The Design And Construction Of Some Of The Earliest Studios There.
