London, John Lane The Bodley Head, 1929 1st. Hardback, approx 9 x 5.5 inches. Red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and dates in numerals to front. In very good condition. Spine faded, a couple of minor handling marks to cloth. Authors inscription to front endpaper “Dorothy C. Peel, 1929. The work of writing this book was earned by Addie’s kindness in take lucky me to the Gras (?) Museum.” Pages all very clean and tight throughout. Else a very good clean and tight copy. 235pp + 2pp adverts. Illustrated with many B&W photo plates. Dorothy Constance Peel, aka Mrs C.S. Peel, prolific journalist and writer of numerous books on household management and domestic social history. She wrote the weekly column “La Manage” on cooking and gave advice on economising during the First World War. She was appointed a co-director of the womens’ service in the Ministry of Food during this time along with Mrs Pember Reeves.
