New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1947. First American edition. Green cloth boards with gilt on black spine markings. Previous owner wrote on ffep "April 1947 / Reviewed for Dr. Gallup for Peoples Book Club." then her name. Clean and tight, no other markings. This is a first US edition of the Chilean author's first novel, La ultima niebla, the story of a woman trapped in a sterile marriage who returns obsessively in fantsy to an obscure erotic dream from her youth. Bombal's work was highly regarded by Borges. This book is considered a key work of Latin American surrealism, a precursor to Magic Realism, and considered by many "the most artistic testimony to women's predicament in Latin American." It was written while Bombal was living with Neruda. She re-wrote the book in English for this edition with the help of her husband.

Description:
London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1948. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First English edition. Translated by the author. Jacket by Alex Jardine. Octavo. 187pp. Spine faintly toned, textblock edges and endleaves foxed and a faint diagonal crease on the front fly, very good in a worn and modestly soiled, good only jacket with some loss at the crown affecting the first word of the title. Bombal was a fascinating woman, friends with Borges and Neruda (who nicknamed her "la abeja de fuego" ["the fire bee"]); she once shot a lover three times and was acquitted after her lover exempted her from guilt. *La Última Niebla* (extensively revised and published as *House of Mist*) was first published in Argentina in 1934. Published in the U.S. the year before this edition, the London edition seems to be much more uncommon. *OCLC* locates eight copies, only two in the…
