The author, nicknamed "pump" was a flamboyant newpaper-man in Madison, WI. The authors anti-Republican views at the time of the Civil War are expressed.

Jacket sunned, worn at edges and folds, stained at spine and along front edges, rippled at rear, chipped at crown and heel, with closed tears at either side of heel, small nick at rear spine fold.
