Geoffrey Bles, 1956-01-01. First Edition/Second Impression. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. A very nice, collectible copy of this Narnia classic, fifth in the series. Of this story Lewis scholar Chad Walsh wrote in 1954 "Lewis at his least-inspired is better than most writers for the young...." Despite that faint praise, this is a story well worth reading.This is the rare 1956 British Second Impression by Geoffrey Bles. Enchanting illustrations by Pauline Baynes. Included is the original dustjacket -- not a reproduction, not price-clipped. Binding is square (not 'cocked' off center) and solid. DJ shows normal yellowing from age, and just a few chips and small tears - I've posted photos for you to examine. The only writing observed anywhere in this copy is just under the "Second Impression" text on the front inside flap of the DJ, where 1.85 has been written 1/8" tall, quite unobtrusive. The front endpaper (paste-down and flyleaf) features a map of the desert and other parts traversed in the story; the back endpaper is blank. Both endpapers show yellowing and foxing (the latter more noticeable at the back). Page edges are ever so slightly foxed in a few places. The front hinge (where the board opens)has been slightly crimped, with the effect being when the board is closed, it leaves a slight gap (about 2mm) between the endpapers - see photo. Finally, the top of the back board exhibits a small, discreet brown stain. We package all materials very carefully to protect your investment.
