Book Near Fine, Dust Jacket Good. Top spine worn with small rips, same with corners. Bottom edge worn badly and missing about 1/4" from the back side of the spine and narrowing to the middle of front cover. A couple of tears backside (no pieces missing).

To my good friend and loyal supporter (see photo) with Best Wishes George H. Ryan Sr. Inscribed on backside of front sandpaper, the capital building is on the front. Authentic book issued by the Illinois Secretary of State in Very Good or better condition. Spine edges bumped, bottom by page turning corner soiled or dusty. Has a slight smell from storage .

Laid in is a signed, handwritten letter to his friend, and frequent correspondant, Canadian author Frederick Niven. References in this 2 page letter ( 1 sheet, both sides ), included along with some personal things, are critical thoughts on the " new reading public ", Thomas Hardy, Charles Lamb, Hitler, and Murder in the Cathedral. It is dated 1939. An interesting association cop, of one of Tomlinson's most respected works..

All my love - always -- Eric." Board topedges with beginning toning, rear board with faint abrasions, small ink stains on top and bottom edges and pale dampstain on the bottom edge; dustjacket spine bottom edge just touched. Contemporary calf spine with six spine compartments between double gilt rules; red morocco label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Mansie Wauch. Marbled paper over boards. All page edges speckled. Remains of old paper label at head of spine and call number in white at tail. In ink on the title page in an old hand, following the title "By Mr Moir." At head of title page in another hand: "To the UPS from Hiester H. Muhlenberg of Reading Pa." Hiester H. Muhlenberg (1812-1886) graduated from Dickinson College in 1829 and practiced medicine in Reading; later he became a banker. A bookplate and inscriptions on the front fixed endpaper indicate that Muhlenberg gave the book to the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College in 1837.
