A two-volume first edition of an account of the Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains by expedition botanist and geologist Edwin James. Compiled from the notes of Major Stephen H. Long, Mr. T. Say, and other gentlemen of the party by Mr. James. This rather scarce set presents the account of the experiences of the Stephen H. Long expedition of 1819-1820, in which Long was sent to find the source of the Platte River in the Rocky Mountains. Lacks the separate accompanying oversize atlas which was issued in 1822 per Howes J.41, who remarks [the expedition was notable in that it supplemented] ". . .earlier discoveries of Pike and of Lewis and Clark, and pronouncing the plains region as nothing but a desert, incapable of cultivation!". --- In maroon half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling, four raised bands to spines and marbled endpapers. --- A very nice set, with bright, mostly… Read More

Halifax: Printed by Abraham Hodge, 1799. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Good. 8vo. 502, (18) pages. Hardcover bound in original full leather. The binding is worn and scuffed but sound. Some of the scuffing on the binding has deep gouges, especially on the rear cover where a strip of leather is missing along the fore edge. Hinges are secure, but there is a strip of old cloth book tape on the front inner hinge, and some of the last few leaves of the index are stuck together at the gutter. This does not really affect the text but there might have been some adhesive applied there. Corners bumped. Contains the front and rear blank flyleaves. There is an early ink signature on the front pastedown which appears to be "L. Silliman" (possibly Levi Silliman? 1797-1867. He was the second Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in North Carolina). "L. Silliman" also is written in light pencil on the rear pastedown, next to an early ink notation of "Haywood." Ellington's. personal bookplate. Housed in an embossed calf binder with string tie, gilt lettering. 48 pages listed in table of contents which refer to 48 labelled sections, each with items such as a summary of the project, folder of photographs taken in Stoll's Alley, newspaper clippings, theatre programs and broadsides, research, records of holders of the property, maps, plans, photographs, drawings, and other related ephemera. Very Good, the leather binder with wear at spine ends and folders. Douglas D. Ellington (1886-1960), was a Native of North Carolina and trained at the Ecole des Beauv Arts, being the first American to win the top honor for decorative competitions at the École.
