About This Item

Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1802. Leather Bound. Very Good +. C. Tiebout. 9 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches. 4to. 913 (Bible) + [40] (index and appendix) + 118 (Concordance) + [1] pages. Bible with 30 engraved plates and maps. Folding maps intact, including the larger item, Journeyings of the Children of Israel. Each Testament has a separate title page, as does the Concordance. Index of plates on final leaf. Purchase statement at the end of the NT (p. 913), is completed in ink, "Humphrey Pratt/1804." There are three sets of Family Records, one after each Testament and 4 pages before the NT, providing genealogical information on the Pratt family of Saybrook, CT. Foxing and toning throughout and minor edge wear to a few pages. From the library of Samuel Hart, of Old Saybrook, CT. Hills 88. O'Callaghan 63p. Bound in contemporary full brown calf which has evidence of heat damage to the covers. Professionally rebacked to style with red spine label. From the library of Samuel Hart, which experienced a fire that damaged a number of books. As a result, items from Hart's library are extremely rare. Samuel Hart (1845-1917) was dean of the Berkeley Divinity School, the (un)official "middle way" seminary of the Episcopal Church at Middletown, Connecticut. In 1886, he became the third custodian of the Standard Book of Common Prayer. In 1892, he became secretary of the House of Bishops. In 1898, he became the fourth historiographer of the Episcopal Church. He served in all three of these offices until his death. (In 1893, he was elected Bishop of Vermont, but he declined the office.) A very nice and unique rarity.
