A directory of Japanese Americans and Japanese American-owned businesses, primarily on the West Coast, but including listings for many other states and the provinces of Canada. The Hokubei Mainichi (North American Daily) was a bilingual newspaper for the Japanese American community in San Francisco. It began publishing in 1948, soon after the end of the Japanese internment during the Second World War. It began producing a "year book" by 1950 (the earliest I have confirmed) in competition with the yearbooks published by Shin Nichibei in Los Angeles.

This directory is printed on newsprint in a smaller format than usual for directories (5-3/4 by 8 inches). The book is organized by state and then city, with businesses organized by type, followed by residents. In most cases, only one person is listed per address, although a small percentage of households have separate listings for more than one person (presumably husband and wife). The resident's address and phone number are given, as is their place of birth, with Nisei (and later generations) denoted by  米 國 (America); natives of Japan are identified by their prefecture.
