About This Item

New York: Stein and Day Publishers, 1974. The history of yachting can be stretched back to its origins on the inland seas and waterways of seventeenth-century Holland. From there it was taken to England and with the Dutch settlers to the New World. The author has traced the history of the era of Nathaniel Herreshoff and Lord Dunraven and steam yacthing of the 1890's; he covers cruising yachtmen such as Joshua Slocum and John C. Voss whose lone voyages laid down the tradition for the single-handers of the 1960' and 1970's; the great ocean races, the Fastnet and the Bermuda, marathons across hundreds of miles of open sea; and the world of dinghy sailing from the cat-rigged boats of New York and Cape cod in the 1850's to the innumerable classes of dinghies that populate the estuaries, rivers and lakes of the world today. The evolution of the yacht is described and illustrated with plans of the great cutters and schooners of the nineteenth-century to the immensely different products of the 1970's. The text is amplified by a most carefully selected display of illustrations, some specially commissioned, as well as masterpieces by Van de Veldes, Turner, Dufy and a discerning choice from the collections of Rosenfeld and Beken. List of color plates provided. 32 color plates, 135 b/w illustrations.  Illustrated endpapers (Yachting off the Isle of Wight, 1848). Wrap-around price-clipped illustrated dust jacket. Jacket illustration ' Schooners and Cutters on the Clyde', c.1870 by H. Forrest. A beautiful impressive copy.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine.
