About This Item

Boston: Allyn and Bacon, 1922 572 pp. plus 50 pp. additional appendices and index. Rear endpapers cracked, but textblock still loosely attached. Pencil diagram on rear endpaper, otherwise nearly clean. PP. 96-97 has brownish stain from a pressed flower. Light speckling of disclored dots on front cover. Dark gray cloth covers rubbed and spine titling mostly gone. Later edition that covers US presidential admilnistrations through Harding. Frontispiece shows Gilbert Stuart's oval portrait of George Washington. Manny pastel colored maps of US. This is a genuine high-school textbook of the 1920s, not a print-on-demand fascimile. Text is divided into 730 chronological topics, each about a page or half-page .Period covered extends from explorers' voyages in 15th, 16th and 17th centuries to the Harding administration. Additional rear matter includes texts of Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Numerous head-and-shoulders illustrations of U.S. leaders. Co-author Trent in a preface said the late C.K. Adams wanted a history textbook that included more favorable viewpoints about British imperialists, Confederate rebels and the importance of westward migration. However, the authors weren't reticent about inserting their own opinions throughout the textbook. For example, they commended Theodore Roosevelt for taking military control of Cuba in 1906, noting that many Cuban planters favored complete annexation by the U.S. (Topic 695) This book was part of the Allyn and Bacon Textbook Series. Size: 8vo -- 7.5 In Tall
