In this study of 25 animals changes in circulating red cell volume, reticulocyte level, and osmotic fragility following acute blood loss are reported. Significant decreases in the osmotic fragility of the red blood cells occurred coincident with the production of a new red blood cell population. The observed increase in osmotic resistance appears to be related not only to the increased number of reticulocytes but also to the large number of new erythrocytes present. Half red leather and marbled paper boards in red, orange, blue and white color themes. Hubbed leather spine with five raised bands, and stamped gilt lettering. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Double column layout. CONDITION: Inner hinges are cracked in both the front and back, yet boards are firmly attached. Dampstain on fore-edge, but does not compromise text. Leaves have evenly toned. Some dark discoloration spots and marginalia occasionally throughout. Crack within the gutter between pages 448 and 449, yet binding is sound and pagination complete.
