Philadelphia: Hoag, Wade & Co, 1878. Folio. iv, 370 pages, illustrations, portraits, map. 31 unnumbered plates. One of the standard early histories of the state with large full page illustrations of the major citizens, major businesses, and large farms. The tiniest state which had already the first successful cotton mill in America and a host of other business. The history begins from the Pre-Columbian Discovery, Rival claims to Territory; English supremacy; French Rivalry; emigration and settlement of the Pilgrims and through its Commercial growth; population....history of the towns, villages and cities of the state of Rhode Island. Bound in ¼ brown calf over brown embossed cloth lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt, spine lettering gilt, silk endpapers, wear to corners and some fraying to cloth along bottom edges. A very good copy with great illustrations.
