Boston: Phillips, Sampson, and Company, 1855-1858. First American Edition. Three volumes; large octavos (23.5cm.); uniformly bound in brown-black blind-embossed cloth, gilt spines, yellow glazed endpapers; portrait frontispieces in each volume, four leaves of plates throughout, including one map. Boards a bit rubbed and worn, some brief soil, insect damage to front fly leaf of Vol. I, textblock of Vol. III uniformly browned due to poor paper stock, else an About Very Good and sound set. BAL 16354 (Vols. I & II) and 16365 (Vol. III). Amorial ownership bookplates dated 1856 in manuscript of Thomas Jefferson Coolidge, great grandson of Thomas Jefferson and the last American plenipotentiary to France, appointed by President Harrison in 1892. .
