Contemporary sprinkled calf with faint remains of gilt-tooled spine. All page edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Running title: Essais de Politique, & de Morale. Front fixed endpaper bears armorial bookplate of P. Daubignard with motto "Tacio quid mihi placet." A few words written in an old hand on title page. Translated from English by Claude Pierre Goujet; imprint is false -- possibly printed in Paris. ESTC, 213884. The second part has separate title page and pagination. In Very Good- Condition: front joint weak; back joint starting at head of spine; loss of leather at ends of spine; corners rubbed; very occasional foxing; otherwise clean and tight.

Contemporary full calf with six spine compartments between gilt rules; leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Journal of Job Scott." Early American Imprints, ser. 1 (Evans), 32810. Howes, S-228. Old inscription running vertically on front board. Inscriptions on endpapers and blank adjacent leaves containing family records for former owner Samuel Davis (1766-1809), his wife Sarah Leedom Davis (1764-1806), Ruth Anna Davis (1801-1846) (presumably their daughter), her husband William Chandler (1787-1878), and their 10 children. Burials are noted as being "at the Valley," at Kennett Square, and at Union Hill. Written in upper part of title page: "Friends' Boarding Haus Kennet Square, Pa." Job Scott (1751-1793) was an American Quaker travelling minister. In Very Good- Condition: leather is rubbed; minor loss at spine ends; light soiling throughout; some page corners creased; a solid copy.

Benito Jerónimo Feijoo y Montenegro (1676-1764) was an important Spanish philosopher whose 9-volume Teatro Crítico Universal (1727-39) and 5-volume Cartas Eruditas y Curiosas (1742-60) were collections of essays on wide-ranging topics. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) British Enlightenment polymath. Scientist, theologian, philosopher he was the first to identify oxygen and other core gases. He invented soda water. In 1794 he emigrated to Pennsylvania where was befriended by Thomas Jefferson as 'one of the few lives precious to mankind'. His achievements have only recently begun to be acknowledged. His metaphysical works influenced Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, and Herbert Spencer.

A. G. Spangenberg (1704-1792) was a German Theologian and minister and a bishop of the Moravian Brethren. As successor of Count Nicolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf, he helped develop international missions, as well as stabilize the theology and organization of the German Moravian Church. Light foxing. In Good Condition: lacking both boards and final leaf (end of index); lower corner of pp. 93-94 lacking, with minor loss of text; corner creasing on first and last leaves; light soiling.

Stated first edition, in printed cream-colored stiff wraps. Near Fine, clean, crisp, bright, and sharp. Some scattered mild tanning of the page margins, paper supple, not brittle. The auxiliary slotted paper disc is absent, not affecting the efficacy of the book, for as Hubbard takes care to point out to the reader, "If you lose the disc, the full list of perceptions on it are at the bottom of every page. Take a pencil and check them off one at a time, just as though they were appearing on the disc." A sharp and sparkling copy, with no markings of any kind.
