About This Item

Farrar, Straus & Giroux, NY, 1973; First Edition; 8vo, 207 pages. Large body of poems, 370 in all, by rugged individualist Robert Lowell, who twice tried to enlist in the American Armed Forces and was both times rejected, then, when finally called up, had become a conscientious objector. Speaking of him, William Dean Howells once said, "More than any other poet, Robert Lowell is the poet of shock; his effects vary from crudity to magnificence, but they are always surprising and always his own -- his style manages to make even quotations and historical facts a personal possession." Over eighty per cent of the poems are published here for the first time. Fine, in a Very Good Plus dust jacket with minor spine tan. A bright, crisp, and attractive copy.
