[Fort Riley, Kansas]:: Privately Published, 1926. A beautiful copy. Bright, clean, square, and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Bound in the original olive-brown cloth that still has most of its new book luster. Lettered in shiny black on the spine and front cover. Pages are crisp. No foxing. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. This history of Fort Riley, Kansas is by a cavalry captain who was stationed there. It has a wealth of military lore, accounts of Buffalo Bill, the Santa Fe Trail, early life on the Kansas frontier, Indians, legends of the Seven Cities of Cibola, John Brown, Grand Duke Alexis, General Sheridan, the Seventh Cavalry, Wounded Knee, the mounted service school during WWI, the 1920 Olympic team, polo and hunting, etc. Illustrations include diagrams, portraits, and numerous early photos (mostly 19th century) of cavalry troops, buildings, military barracks, store houses, corrals, etc. Complete with 2 folding maps -- both in perfect condition. The two fold-out maps are: 1) Kansas, with its early travel routes and trails, counties and rivers; and 2) a large detailed topographical map of the U.S. Military Reservation of Fort Riley (measuring 21 inches x 17.5 inches when fully opened).
