Half dark-maroon leather with marbled paper over boards, marbled endpapers, and matching marbled edges of text blocks. Spines with five raised bands and ruled panels. Each volume has an engraved frontis. Vol I with fold-out map which has two short tears at edges.. Bindings sound. Vol I has repaired front hinge and Vol III has repaired rear hinge. There is some rubbing and wear at edges, and rubbing over the boards. Hornby rose to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. Among his many accomplishments was the prevention of a shooting war between the US and England over a border dispute with Canada in the San Juan Islands. He has been described as the greatest British admiral since Nelson. ; Map, engraved frontises; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 413; 407; 444 pages .
