About This Item

London:: Richard Bentley,, 1844.. Second Edition. Hardcover. Three volumes, hardback octavos in half polished calf on marbled boards, marbled endpapers. Spines with five raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt, labels in red and green morocco, top edges gilt. 442, 439, and 455 pages respectively; folding maps mounted at front of volumes I and II; frontis portraits of Cortes, Montezuma and, again, Cortes, respectively. Still the standard by which later histories are measured, this is a lovely set of the second edition. Prelims a little toned and occasional light soiling in the text. Bindings (marked G.P. Putnam's Sons on verso of front endpapers) are sound and covers very lightly edgeworn. Top couple of inches of back cover of volume I is lightly sunned.
