Open and closed tears to the tips and edges of the frontispiece tissue guard. The text appears unmarked. The binding is shaken, but still intact.

All edges gilt as well. Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. 261 p. w/ many great illustrations, fold out map, appendix. An attractive book, with much history and background. Vizetelly was a successful newspaper man who went into publishing both English and translated European works, and was notably prosecuted twice for obscene libel in publishing Emile Zola. His interest in wine was active through most of his adult life.

Also included is a typed list on onion paper, of the different counties in California, The topology and character of the soil, how many wineries in the county, and the types of wines and grapes. Probably done during the forties or fifties because of the number of sweet wines on the list: Claret, Sauternes, Muscatel, Angelica, etc.; and traditional table wines: Chianti, Burgundy, Riesling, etc.
