About This Item

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1885. Cloth. Very Good. The uncommon 1885 1st edition of this wonderful look at General Ulysses Grant's beloved Arabian Stallions "Leopard" and "Linden" and their sons "Beale", "Hegira" and "Islam". A fragile book, given its age, but this copy has held up very well: Solid and VG in its green cloth, with bright gilt-titling and insignia along the front panel. A degree of scuffing to the rear panel and very light chipping along the edges of the title page, otherwise very clean. Lovely sketch of "Leopard" (by H.S. Kittredge) at the frontispiece and additional sketches of "Linden Tree" (also by H.S. Kittredge), "General Beale" (by A.J. Schultz), "Hegira" (by R. Vandusen) and "Old Henry Clay" (by H.S. Kittredge) thru the text. All of the portraits are in pristine condition and include their original tissue-guards. Tall quarto, all edges gilt, very informative, 66 pg. narrative by Randolph Huntington. Also includes a laid-in period "Pedigree" sheet, which is unmarked. A fascinating piece of Americana and late 19th century equine history.
