About This Item

Berkeley: Printed by The Professional Press, 1918. Soft cover. Very Good. Octavo size, 181 pp. Full title page: "History of the Berkeley Schools, An account of the School Systems of Berkeley from its establishment to date, with a detailed presentation of the special features in the various schools". Early, perhaps the first, written history of the schools in Berkeley. The author opens with a brief historical sketch of the land passing from the last Spanish governor of California in 1820 to Don Luis Peralta, who divided the land between his four sons. From this short tour through history he moves to the First Board of Education and then sets forth how the school system grew and developed, even listing the particulars of each school in the district - a fascinating glimpse into the educational history of an area that is now home to Cal, one of the great research universities.

This copy has a prior owner name written at the top of the front wrap of J.E. Cuddeback; a gentleman of that name served as the Superintendent of Schools in Mill Valley at about the time this book was published, so it is entirely likely this was his copy.

___DESCRIPTION: Card stock wraps, tan with green lettering and a brown decorative device on the front, the spine is plain, the famous quote by Bishop Berkeley printed on the front free endpaper ("Westward the course of empire takes its way"), small octavo size (almost 8" tall), pagination: (2 blank pp), (3-7), 8-181 includes an almost 40-page list at the back of Berkeley High School Graduates, by year, beginning with John C. Dornin as the single graduate for the year 1883.

___CONDITION: Overall very good, some creasing to the card stock wraps, minor overall edgewear; internally, there are a few stains that may be black ink on the endpapers, front and back, the first few and final few pages, and the back cover - all of the text pages are clean and bright.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details.
