Description:
London : J Streater, for Henry Twiford, George Sawbridge, Thomas Dring, and John Place, 1657 A very good copy of Londinopolis in full leather binding. James Howell, (c1594-1666) navigated his way with some difficulty through the changing allegiances of the English Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration, spending 8 years in prison between 1643 and 1650. He attempted various court positions, becoming Royal Historiographer to Charles II in 1660, but made most of his living from writing. Londinopolis describes the main landmarks and areas of London with outlines of their history. Lowell is frank that he has 'fetched' most of his materials from others and it is considered that much of the content comes from Stow. This copy of Londinopolis is in a later 1800's full leather binding by H Woodburn. This has a delicate blind tooled border of leaves to the boards; raised bands, blind tooled designs and title label to spine. It is showing some wear to the front hinge and edges and has a small scuff but is… Read More

Description:
London: Printed and Sold by J. Peele, at Locke's Head..., 1728.. 72pp. Octavo (signed in 4s). Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume, lower edges partially untrimmed. Some modest foxing early and late, extremely faint tidemark to lower portion of a number of leaves, but otherwise a very good copy. The rare first edition of this response to Bishop Gibson's pastoral letter - one of two attributed to Tindal - in which the noted freethinking Deist takes to task the Bishop's implicit elevation of faith above reason, and defends in general freedom of thought and discourse against subjugation to religious authority. In an interesting side note to Tindal's response to Gibson's assertion "That in some late Writings publick Stews have been openly vindicated...," he makes reference to the celebrated pseudonymously published 1724 pamphlet by Mandeville, A MODEST DEFENCE OF PUBLICK STEWS .... This 1728 printing is rare: ESTC locates only seven copies, of which four are in North America (BYU, UCLA, Huntington and… Read More

Description:
LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to Charles II, Preface to the Reader, alphabetical table of subscribers ('benefactors'), 12 leaves of coats of arms of the benefactors, portrait of Charles II pasted at the beginning of a general… Read More

First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict.
