Also contains scores of b&w illustrations, mostly busts of major leaders., and many regional maps. Brown cloth cover has just light wear, with bumping of corners. Light pencil notes on endpapers and frontispiece map. Nearly all text pages clean, a few marginal notes in pencil. A history textbook for high school students. McLaughlin notes in his preface that his history primarily is a political narrative, mostly organized by presidential administrations. It covers the period from Columbus's voyages to 1899. Pre-columbian visits and settlements are condensed to just 10 pages. An appendix containing the U.S. Constitution includes just the first 15 amendments. Boldface topic labels on most pages make it easy to look up particular events or leaders. A useful volume for tracing nationalistic and imperial values as they were being cultivated by US school systems at the close of the 19th Century. This book was part of Appleton's Twentieth Century Text-books series. Size: 8vo -- 8 in Tall.
