About This Item

London: Printed for C. Cooke ("Cooke's Edition"), n.d.. Hardcover. Poor. Five volumes (complete), twenty-fourmo size size, approx. 1214 pp. Originally published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon; the story has become such a part of our culture that the terms "tilting at windmills" and "quixodic" have entered the vernacular.

This likely an early reprint of "Cooke's Edition" as the title page is undated, which edition was apparently first published in the mid eighteenth-century. The bindings are quite shabby and some of the boards only on by the binding cords, we offer it as-is.

___DESCRIPTION: Five volumes, each volume in half leather over marbled boards, red leather spine labels, according to the title pages "Embellished with Superb Engravings"; twenty-fourmo size (5 5/8" by 3 1/2"), pagination: Vol. I, [i-iv, title page and dedication] [i] ii-xxi, 22-23, xxiv ("Life of Cervantes"), [i-ii, Translator's Statement] [i] ii-viii (Preface), [1] 2-196; Vol. II, [1-3] 4-239; Vol. III, [1-3] 4-247; Vol. IV, [1-3] 4-247, and Vol. V, [1-3] 4-247.

___CONDITION: We are grading as "Poor" as the bindings are extremely worn, the leather dry and cracking, the marbled boards quite rubbed, and while the text blocks seem strong several of the boards are almost detached; the interiors are mostly clean although several leaves are tattered around the margins, the only markings we see a pencilled name on the front free endpaper of each volume, and light prior bookseller marks, also in pencil on the front free endpaper of the first volume.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
