Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and…

London, 1703. Book. Illus. by Frontispiece in Volume One, & Engraved Portraits of James I, Charles I and George Villiers.. Very Good Plus. Full-Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A superb memoir of British politics 1618 to 1648, a very early beginning of political science., this first edition in 8 vo. size published between 1703 and 1708. No printer's imprint or publisher listed, only "London (and the date in Roman numerals)". The first editions of this work appeared in eight parts between 1659 and 1701, in folio size. Sometimes called "the Rushworth Papers", they were attacked by royalist writers for alleged partiality. Despite the truth of the charge, it is still a useful reference for the reign of Charles I, who declared war on Parliament in 1642, beginning England's Civil Wars and the rise of Oliver Cromwell. Rushworth became Secretary of the New Model Army and served General Fairfax, under Cromwell. When the King was captured, tried , and executed, Rushworth made a detailed record of the events which led to the King's demise. His attacks on the King were later to be echoed by Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson in the American frustration with George III, leading to United States independence. Rushworth remained close to Cromwell, becoming his personal secretary and writing the plans to abolish the monarchy. He was a long time Member of Parliament from Berwick. Among his friends were John Milton, John Owen, John Bunyan and Samuel Pepys. When Charles II was restored to the monarchy, Rushworth was among those whom the new King lashed out at for the execution of his father. He was jailed and spent the last six years of his life in Southwark prison. Full contemporary calf boards , blindstamped in the Cambridge style, some wear at the corners which have been neatly repaired. New calf spines in the 17th Century style, with raised bands, gilt lines along the bands and gilt emblems in the spine panels. Title labels and volume labels in deep red on all six volumes. Very fine bindings, all hinges fine, and inside some age toning, as might be expected after 300 plus years. Restored by one of England's finest binders. A very nice set. No publisher noted on the title pages..

London: London: printed for J. Nourse, at the Lamb, opposite Katherine-Street, in the Strand, 1746. 1st Edition . Full leather. Very Good. First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. London (and New York): Hodder and Stoughton (for George H. Doran Company), 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing, first state. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. This copy is the elusive first state of the first American edition. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. The U.S. first edition was made from British first edition sheets bound in a plain coarse dark red cloth with the same gilt titles on the spine as used on the British. Unlike its…

WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
