Before leaving Spain, he was lecturer in theology at Ocana, and in April 1569, was sent to Lima, Peru, where the Jesuits had been established in the proceeding year. At Lima, Acosta again occupied the chair of theology; his fame as an orator had preceded him. In 1571 he went to Cuzco as a visitor of the college of the Jesuits then recently founded. 1895. Folio. 743pp, illustrated with plates, portraits, index to the historical section, index of biographies, and an index of illustrations. The frontispiece, not issued with all copies, is not present here. Published in St. Louis by Woodward & Tiernan Printing Company - Original gilt-stamped calf with a vignette of a longhorn on the cover.
An Important and Rare Book - Often referred to as One of the "Big Four" cattle books.
Page #247 is separated from the binding but is present as well as one image plate.
A couple of the front pages are taped - and several of the interior pages are as well. I'm not an expert - but they did a pretty good job. Overall I think this copy is in Good condition. The Cover and binding I would rate as Very Good. And the binding is still strong and tight - Overall this is a really nice copy of a fairly rare first edition.

Description:
George Wingate entered the Civil War as a private in the New York State Guard. He soon discovered that the militia had very poor shooting skills, and devoted himself to correcting that failing. By the end of the war he had been promoted to Captain, and was recognized as a leading expert on marksmanship training. William Conant Church was the editor of the Army and Navy Journal. After the war he recognized Wingate's expertise and asked him to write a series of articles on marksmanship and rifle training which he published in the Journal. These articles were immediately widely and highly acclaimed. Church and Wingate decided an organization was needed to facilitate the spread of this knowledge, and together founded The National Rifle Association. The articles from the Army and Navy Journal were collected, and along with additional material were published in 1872 as "Manual for Rifle Practice".
Wingate makes reference following the Preface that this is the Second… Read More

New York: Antiquarian Press, 1959 2 volumes. Reprint of the excessively rare 1895 first edition. One of 550 copies. New introduction by J. Frank Dobie. Folio. 12x8¾ inches. 743pp. (paginated continuously) plus colored frontispiece and numerous illustrations, mostly from photographs. Blind and gilt-stamped cowhide, gilt over brown buckram. A very fine, as new set with matching publisher's slipcase. Includes the new introduction by J. Frank Dobie. "One of the `Big Four' cattle books, and after Freeman's Prose and Poetry, the most important on the subject. The book contains a great wealth of information, and is a cornerstone in any range library ... Supposedly most of the first edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire, hence its rarity today. It is a vital and useful book" (Reese). [Howes II: C-826; McVicker: B-114; Reese, Six-Score: 24]. [For the first edition, see: Adams, Herd: 593; Dobie: p.100; Dykes, Kid: 29; Graff: 891; Howes I: C-820; Howes II: C-826; Vandale: 44]..

Description:
First Edition. 743 pp. Illustrated with b&w plates (color frontispiece not present, but unclear if it was issued with all copies). Folio, (12¼x9"), full brown leather stamped blind and in gilt, all edges marbled. Expertly rebacked with original spine laid down; lacking frontispiece, pages remarkably clean, with just a few pages with light soiling; very good or better. Inscribed by George W. Conover, whose biography is featured on pp. 661-62. Key text on the history of the cattle industry: "One of the 'big four' cattle books... no collector's library would be complete without it..." - Adams. Adams calls the 1895 first edition "very rare," and notes that nearly all of that edition was lost in a warehouse fire. Jenkins notes that the work was first "conceived as a mug book to be sold primarily to the people whose biographies appeared in it, the final published book contained so much of value on the cattle industry that it has become a classic in its field." This copy is a prime example of the vanity…

Frank Dobie once said: 'In 1928 I traded a pair of store-bought boots to my Uncle Neville Dobie for his copy of this book. A man would have to throw in a young Santa Gertrudis bull now to get a copy.'
