1562 FLORENCE Chronicle Villani Nuova Cronica Fiorenza ITALY Black Plague RARE

Few names from the Italian Renaissance are as synonymous with chronicle history as Villani. Matteo and his brother Giovanni produced one of the most important 14th-century historical chronicles. Nuova Cronica, as it now known, was a somewhat biased study of the history of Florence providing insight on major events and figures.

Villani, curiously, took a theological approach to their chronicle, making unfounded assumptions and claims about sin and morals in relation to the outcome of historical events. The most significant event at that time, of course, was the Black Death, or the Great Plague. Matteo Villani's own description of the Plague:

"Those few discreet folk who remained alive expected many things, all of which, by reasons of the corruption of sin, failed among mankind, whose minds followed marvellously in the contrary direction. They believed that those whom God's grace had saved from death, having beheld the destruction of their neighbors, and having heard the same tidings from all the nations of the world, would become better-conditioned, humble, virtuous, and Catholic."

This 1562 Venetian edition was published by the famed publisher Giunti.

Description:
1797 HUGE FOLIO Dryden Fables 1st ed Homer Chaucer Boccaccio Diana Beauclerc ART
John Dryden was a 17th-century English poet who was known as England's very first Poet Laureate and would lead England into a literary period that would become known as the Age of Dryden. He also established standard forms of English poetry though his satires, fables, epigrams, poems, and plays.
'Fables, Ancient and Modern' is Dryden's translations of some of the most famous and iconic works of ancient literature. Dryden includes selections from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', Homer's 'Iliad', and even stories from Giovanni Boccaccio, all translated into English verse.
This particular 1797 edition is an enormous folio! And the size alone is not the only appeal – this edition contains engravings from the artwork of Diana Beauclerc. These 9 full-page illustrations are highly coveted works of art and make this folio one of the most desirable editions of Dryden's 'Fables'.

Description:
1680 King Edward 1ed Medieval England Gaveston Despenser FOLIO Cary PROVENANCE
Edward II of England was an early 14th-century king of England best-remembered for his political turmoil which arose from his relationships with Piers Gaveston and Hugh Despenser. Edward gave unwarranted privileges to these nobles (who had significant wealth and influence) – an act that angered other barons. So much so, that these other nobles executed Gaveston for his actions to the king. Edward's relationships with these men caused his reign to be one of the most tumultuous reigns of medieval England.
Author Henry Cary wrote an important 17th-century survey of Edward II's reign which focused primarily on the rise and fall of his two closest allies – Gaveston and Despenser.

Description:
1873 Jules Verne 1ed Around the World in 80 Days Adventure Voyages French Hetzel

"Reality provides us with facts so romantic that imagination itself could add nothing to them."
― Jules Verne

Jules Verne's adventure novels are some of the most popular and famous works of literature of all time. Known mostly for his works of science fiction, 'Voyages Extraordinaires' was Verne's largest collection of fantasy novels and stories. Perhaps his most famous work of all was none other than 'Around the World in 80 Days'. This story remains hugely popular today, combining exploration, adventure, and a race against time!

Note on dating: like many other Verne first editions, the title page included was issued in each edition, including later printings. The dating comes from the ads in the back of the book – however, this edition has no ads! A rare 1873 true first edition of Verne!

1678 ENGLISH Quevedo Visions Occult GHOSTS Spanish Fantasy Dreams Demons Hell

"He who spends time regretting the past loses the present and risks the future."
― Francisco de Quevedo

Francisco de Quevedo was one of the most well-known Spanish authors of the early 17th-century. He is most remembered for his satirical 'dream' poetry in which he writes himself into his story. 'Dreams' or 'Visions' is a collection of visions in which Quevedo witnesses the Day of Judgment and sees visions of hell, demons and devils, evil spirits being exorcised, and more experiences of the occult. The satire came in the form of Quevedo seeing various recognizable groups of people in hell including lawyers, astrologers, innkeepers, Protestants, accountants, Jews, physicians, and …women.
